5 Jenis Esai untuk Beasiswa dan Contoh Penulisannya

KOMPAS.com - Calon mahasiswa yang ingin kuliah di luar negeri, menulis esai menjadi salah satu syarat yang harus dipenuhi. Namun, persyaratan esai tersebut membuat banyak calon mahasiswa bingung bagaimana cara menulisnya.

Sebelum menulis esai, kamu dapat mengetahui jenis-jenis esai beasiswa luar negeri, yakni Motivation Letter atau Motivation Statement, Personal Statement, Statement of Purpose, Study Objective dan  Study Plan.

Meski sama-sama esai, namun tujuan penulisan masing-masing esai tersebut jelas berbeda. Untuk lebih jelasnya, berikut ini perbedaan masing-masing esai dan cara menulisnya, melansir konsultan beasiswa Kobi Education.

Perlu dipahami, esai untuk setiap orang bisa berbeda, sesuai dengan tujuan studimu. Karena itu, penulisan esai baiknya tidak menyadur milik orang lain.

1. Motivation Letter atau Motivation Statement

Esai yang berisikan penjelasan mengapa kamu ingin mendapatkan beasiswa yang kamu pilih. Kamu dapat menuliskan kekurangan dan kelebihan yang kamu miliki.

My name is Anindito Faaz, applying for MSc Integrative Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh. I hold a bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine from Future University Indonesia. I am keenly interested in neuroscience as well as want to be an expert in it.

The field of neuroscience is strongly related to my past experience and research focus. During my undergraduate study, I tried to specialize in that field by becoming a laboratory assistant in a microanatomy laboratory. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Future University. During my three years work in laboratory, I was involved in our department’s neuroanatomy research entitled “Brain Mapping of Indonesian Bat’s as an Animal Model for Rabies Diseases.” Having experience for three years in neuroanatomy and animal model. I have become more interested in studying neuroscience to deepen my skill and knowledge.

I have a special personal reason to study neuroscience at Edinburgh. My late mother was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and I understand the burden of the family who has a schizophrenic family member. Some mental illnesses and neurological problems actually have started during pregnancy since the baby is still in the womb. However, the study is still growing and I would like to explore the possibility of Schizophrenia developing since the baby is in the womb with zebrafish as an animal model.

By using zebrafish as an animal model, we can see the development of the brain under the microscope without killing the mother as its embryo developed outside the mother body. Unfortunately, Indonesia currently still does not have any zebrafish facility research yet. Therefore, in order to study neurodegenerative discase using zebrafish as animal model, I had to find a university that has a zebrafish facility. Joining the MSc Integrative Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh will give me a chance to work with zebrafish, as I can learn more about how to use zebrafish as an animal model at Edinburgh Zebrafish Facility.

I realize that it is important for me as a young generation to support my nation’s development through my ability. I need to give my best contribution to my country and for the betterment of the world in general. The path that I have chosen is being an expert in neuroscience. After I finish my postgraduate study at The University of Edinburgh, I am planning to become a lecturer at Future University. I would like to establish a zebrafish research group in Indonesia and a zebrafish facility there so I can help Indonesian scientists to develop research using zebrafish. I believe my plan could be started and my dream might come true by pursuing higher study in Integrative Neuroscience Master Program at The University of Edinburgh.

2. Personal Statement

Esai ini berfokus pada mengulik cerita unikmu kamu di masa lalu yang mendorong untuk mengejar beasiswa atau program studi.

Contohnya :
Living with a family member who suffers from Parkinson’s disease has opened my mind that a tiny alteration in the nervous system can change the whole family member’s life. My mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease when I was in junior high school, and our life changed drastically overnight. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s have been an enormous financial and emotional burden for the family and society until now. I surely understand that being a caretaker of people who have neurological problems is a high level burden. Hence, I wish I can find a way to lessen the burden of families which own a family member with neurological diseases with knowledge and research in biomedicine.

Having a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Future University and working as a teacher assistant in the anatomy laboratory during my bachelor study study have provided me with a basic knowledge on how the human body works and how to treat neurodegenerative disease with the basic therapy. As I am interested in research and writing, I joined the neuroscience study club for undergraduates in the Faculty of Biology, Future University and became a team leader of the “Neuraclub”, a neuroscience online journal club meetings, I realize that a lot neurological diseases such as Parkinson Diseases are still incurable. Understanding these topics makes me want to develop a drug that can cure the neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s Diseases.

One of the ways to find a cure for neurodegenerative disease is through higher study and research in biomedicine. After some research, I found out that my previous basic and biomedical knowledge from my bachelor’s degree is strongly relevant with the courses in the Master Program in Biomedicine at Uppsala University. The master’s Programme in Biomedicine provides courses on advanced Neurobiology and Drug Development that will deepen my knowledge in the biology and functions of the brain, neurodegeneration and how to develop a drug to cure neurological disease. The one-semester long thesis research in Biomedicine will allow me to work in the high-technology laboratories with expert researchers and join the drug development research group at Faculty of Medicine, Uppsala University. Uppsala has also been ranked among the best research universities in the world in Biomedicine and has a strong relationship with the industry. Thus, it can help me to experience research or having internships in the Swedish biomedical industry as well.

After I finish my master’s degree, I plan to go back to Indonesia to become a lecturer at a public university. I also have a dream to establish a Neuroscience research institute in my home country as we still need to improve the development of the nation’s research in biomedicine, especially in Neuroscience, I believe that I could take a further step to reach my professional plan and to lessen the burden of neurodegenerative disease in the society by taking higher study in Master Programme in Biomedicine at Uppsala University.

3. Statement of Purpose

A unique individual is shaped by a unique education and my story of my upbringing and education is certainly not ordinary. I started off with a heavy interest in epidemiology, where I hoped to be able to use my medical knowledge to fight infectious diseases in developing countries. However, after several years in the field, I realized that the struggle to cure diseases and fund research would forever be lacking if not combined with a business perspective. For this reason, I started pursuing an interest in Business Policy, and itt is what has driven me to apply for this MBA at Harvard University.

To me, business has always been a way to fulfill an unmet need in the community. When I worked in sub-Saharan Africa to help villagers sterilize water during outbreaks of infectious disease. I saw that many villagers ended up banding together to provide water for the entire village in exchange for items such as food and clothing. This type of specialization forms the basis of business and showed me the potential to utilize self-sustainable business practices to drive innovation in the field of tropical medicine.This-MBA from Harvard University will provide me with the knowledge and the connections that I will need to continue to do meaningful work that will benefit the community and maybe the world.

As a University that is known throughout the world, Harvard is known for offering a unique education to unique students. I am a non-traditional student who has a clear goal regarding how I want to utilize my degree in the future, and I know that the specialized education that Harvard will provide me will enhance not only my business acumen, but my way of viewing the world. I hope to be able to use the training that I gain through this MBA program to continue to help those in developing nations fight disease through helping them establish sustainable business practices which help to specialize care and get it to where it is needed most.

4. Study Objective

Esai yang berisikan apa yang akan kamu lakukan setelah lulus kuliah, kamu juga dapat menuliskan apa kontribusi kamu nantinya.

I want to pursue a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Courses that I am especially interested in are Curriculum Design and Language Teaching Methodology. This degree is relevant to my educational background. A bachelor’s degree in English language and literature and my current profession as a teaching assistant at Hasanuddin University and Muhammadiyah University. I am confident that a master’s degree will enhance my academic qualifications and help me gain professional development to become a full time lecturer soon.

My experience as a teaching assistant and various English tutor positions are my most valuable assets in pursuing a master’s degree in TESOL. I will also contribute to the coursework that I will undertake by sharing my experience teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia.
My skills and interest in TESOL have been further improved upon by the seminar and workshop that I participated in. As for study commitment, I believe my distinction as the best university graduate with 3.99 GPA is a testament to my commitment to excel academically.
Firstly, I need to undertake my master’s degree in the US because I would like to be immersed in a different learning atmosphere. I also want to challenge myself to continue my studies in the United States and gain a more comprehensive knowledge of its cultural values. As a teacher of English as a foreign language, I believe that knowledge about the culture of an English speaking country is fundamental as culture is an inseparable component of understanding a language. There is a need to share those cultural aspects with the students through designing a curriculum to combine language and cultural learning. Hopefully, the students would be able to use the language in the appropriate cultural context and appreciate and respect foreign cultural values.

Furthermore, by continuing my studies in the US, there will be many opportunities to attend famous international TESOL conferences that are often held in the US. I will gain insight into current trends in English language teaching, connect with experts in TESOL and learn from their research.

I also intend to continue helping out the Lentera Negeri community, which helps make English language education available for less fortunate students. In the end, the chance given to me to continue in the US would benefit me and help ensure the future development of Indonesian students and aspiring English language teachers.

5. Study Plan

Esai yang berisikan rencana studi yang akan kamu lakukan dari awal hingga lulus kuliah.

Contohnya :

Massey’s Master of Veterinary Studies (Without Major) can be built based on a student’s particular and personal academic needs. In the 1st semester, I am planning to take the advanced course in the principles of dairy and beef cattle management (total 30 credits) as well as the animal health management (30 credits). The 2nd semester, I will take a course in theriogenology (60 credits), which focuses on cattle reproduction. This course studies the physiology and pathology of male and female reproductive systems of animals and the clinical practice of veterinary obstetrics, gynecology, and andrology. In the last semester, I will undertake a research report/thesis about the Comparison analysis of physiological, reproduction, and welfare conditions of Indonesian and New Zealand dairy cattle which will result in published work.

My purposes for my master research thesis will be to understand the physiological reproduction, and welfare conditions of Indonesian and New Zealand dairy cattle, analyze the association of dairy cattle physiological reproduction and the welfare condition in Indonesia and New Zealand and give suggestions for Indonesia from the result of the analysis. This research will be conducted in Indonesia and New Zealand in my last semester of master study. I hope this research can be a reference to make a better design for Indonesia’s future cattle farming using New Zealand as a role model.
