Akurasi diperlukan saat kamu menggunakan bahasa Inggris untuk kegiatan formal, seperti mengikuti tes, membuat CV kerja atau beasiswa, hingga wawancara berbahasa Inggris.

Dalam pelajaran Bahasa Inggris, tenses dibagi berdasarkan waktunya, yaitu di masa sekarang (present), masa lalu (past), dan masa depan (future).

1. Simple Present Tense

Simple present tense merupakan salah satu tenses yang sering digunakan dalam penyusunan kalimat bahasa Inggris.

Tujuan memakai simple present tense untuk menyatakan fakta, kebiasaan, dan juga kejadian-kejadian yang terjadi pada saat sekarang ini.

2. Present Continuous Tense

Present continuous tense ini biasa digunakan untuk menunjukkan aktivitas atau kejadian yang sedang terjadi pada saat pembicaraan sedang berlangsung.

Selain itu, present continuous tense ini pun juga bisa digunakan untuk membuat suatu rencana di masa depan.

• S + Am/Is/Are + Verb –ing (Continuous Form)

3. Present Perfect Tense

Present perfect tense ini untuk menceritakan suatu aktivitas ataupun situasi yang telah dimulai di masa lalu, dan telah selesai di masa lalu juga atau masih berlanjut sampai sekarang.

Present perfect tense juga berfungsi untuk menunjukkan aktivitas atau aksi yang masih berlangsung atau baru saja selesai.

• S + Has / Have + Verb 3 (Past Participle)

• I’ve read his novel
• I have lived in Yogyakarta for 5 years

4. Present Perfect Continous Tense

Present Perfect Continous Tense adalah salah satu tense yang pada penggunaannya memiliki fungsi untuk menjabarkan suatu aktivitas atau aksi yang telah selesai di masa lampau atau juga bisa untuk menjabarkan suatu aksi yang telah dimulai di masa lalu dan masih terus berlangsung hingga sekarang.

Kalimat dengan menggunakan Present Perfect Continuous Tense ini memiliki durasi waktu tertentu dan mempunyai relevansi dengan kondisi yang ada sekarang.

• S + Has/Have + Been + Verb -ing (Continuous Form)

Contoh present perfect continuous tense

• He has been working in the company since 1998.
• The baby has been playing with a toy for an hour.
• The construction laborers are hungry since they have been removing the material

5. Simple Past Tense

Simple Past Tense ini keterbalikan dari Simple Present Tense, yang mana memiliki fungsi untuk menjabarkan suatu kejadian yang telah terjadi di masa lampau.

Jadi, ketika kita hendak membuat cerita masa lalu, kebanyakan kalimat harus disusun dengan menggunakan tense yang satu ini.

6. Past Continuous Tense

Tenses yang satu ini sering digunakan untuk menjabarkan bahwa suatu kejadian sedang terjadi di waktu tertentu pada masa lalu.

Misalnya, saat ada dua buah kejadian di masa lampau dan satu kejadian yang sedang mengoreksi kejadian yang lain. Kejadian yang sedang dikoreksi itulah yang mengunakan past continuous tense.

• S + Was/Were + Verb –ing (Continuous form)

Contoh past continuous tense

• She was reading when I entered the room.
• Miami team was playing basketball all day yesterday
• I was sleeping when the motorcycle crashed my home last night

7. Past Perfect Tense

Past Perfect Tense ini digunakan untuk menunjukkan suatu kejadian yang terjadi sebelum waktu tertentu di masa lampau. Pada dasarnya, past perfect tense ini lebih menekankan fakta ketimbang durasi.

Jadi intinya, past perfect tense ini pada penggunaannya lebih untuk menyatakan bahwa suatu aksi telah selesai di masa lalu, sebelum aksi lainnya terjadi di masa lalu pula.

8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Past Perfect Continuous Tense berfungsi untuk mengungkapkan sebuah aksi yang terjadi di masa lalu dan telah selesai pada suatu titik tertentu di masa lalu pula. Hanya saja, tense ini lebih menekankan pada durasi kejadian tersebut.

• When the guest came, we had been waiting for an hour
• He had been standing in front of the door for an hour before it was opened
• He was annoyed since he had been waiting for 3 hours at the train station

9. Simple Future Tense

Simple future tense ini memiliki fungsi untuk menjabarkan suatu aksi di masa yang akan datang dan tidak dapat dipengaruhi oleh aksi-aksi yang lain.

Selain itu, simple future tense ini juga bisa digunakan untuk membuat keputusan di masa depan secara spontan ataupun asumsi yang berhubungan dengan masa yang akan datang.

Rumus Simple Future Tense

• S + Will + Verb 1 (present form)

Atau

• S + be (is /are/am) + going to + Verb 1 (present form)

10. Future Continuous Tense

Fungsi dari future continuous tense adalah untuk menunjukkan suatu aksi yang terjadi di waktu tertentu pada masa yang akan datang dan juga aksi yang pasti akan terjadi dalam waktu dekat di masa depan.

Rumus Future Continuous Tense

• S + Will + Be + Verb –ing (Continuous form)

Contoh future continuous tense

• Aldi will be working at the office when you arrive
• She will be sleeping at 11 p.m
• She will be delivering the speech to undergraduates at 4 p.m tomorrow afternoon

11. Future Perfect Tense

Future perfect tense ini dapat digunakan untuk mengungkapkan bahwa suatu aktivitas sudah akan selesai pada suatu titik waktu di masa yang akan datang.

Intinya, future perfect tense ini menekankan pada aksi yang akan berakhir pada waktu tertentu di masa depan.

• He will have left work at 5 p.m
• I will have finished the homework by the time my father gets home
• You will have done the same work for 4 years

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Future perfect continuous tense ini berfungsi untuk menunjukkan aktifitas yang sudah berlangsung selama sekian lama, sampai pada waktu kedepan.

• S + Will + Have + Been + Verb –ing (Continuous Form)

Contoh future perfect continuous tense

• The Dog will have been sleeping long when you get home
• She will have been taking charge of the team for the next hour
• Rania will have been waiting for three months when the corn is ready to harves

13. Simple Past Future Tense

Simple past future tense ini digunakan untuk kalimat yang tidak langsung, di mana di situ terdapat perubahan bentuk untuk menyesuaikan dengan rangkaian peristiwa yang ada.

Jadi, apabila diambil kesimpulan, simple past future tense ini menyatakan suatu aksi yang akan dilakukan, membuat prediksi, dan membuat janji di masa depan pada saat berada di masa lalu.

14. Past Future Continuous Tense

Past Future Continuous tense merupakan salah satu bentuk kata kerja untuk menyatakan situasi ataupun aktivitas imajiner yang sedang berlangsung, apabila kondisi tidak langsungnya terpenuhi.

Artinya, past future continuous tense ini menekankan pada serangkaian atau durasi suatu aksi yang terjadi, dan juga bisa digunakan untuk kalimat tidak langsung.

Contoh past future continuous tense 

• I would be attending the conference if I was in Yogyakarta, but now I’m not in Yogyakarta.
• I made a promise that I would be doing my homework all day long tomorrow.
• I would be singing the Indonesia anthem last Sunday.

15. Past Future Perfect Tense

Past future perfect tense ini bisa digunakan untuk membicarakan suatu aktivitas yang tidak terjadi di masa lalu.

Namun, ada 3 waktu yang bisa terjadi di masa lalu, di mana hal itu merujuk pada waktu yang akan datang, waktu tertentu di masa lalu, tetapi aktivitaa yang terjadi harus sudah selesai sebelum waktu yang akan datang. Biasanya, past future perfect tense ini digunakan pada kalimat tidak langsung.

• She told the students that they should have finished the homework this morning.

16. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Past future perfect continuous tense adalah salah satu bentuk kata kerja untuk menyatakan sebuah aksi atau situasi imaginer sedang berlangsung, pada titik tertentu atau selama periode tertentu di masa lampau.
