Lagu ini menjadi singel utama dari album studio kelima mereka, A Farewell to Kings (1977).

Lagu tersebut ditulis oleh sang drummer, Neil Peart, dan temannya, Peter Talbot.

“Closer to the Heart” merupakan singel pertama Rush yang menduduki posisi ke-36 di UK Singles Chart pada Februari 1978.

Selain itu, lagu ini juga sempat menempati posisi ke-45 di Kanada dan ke-76 di US Billboard Hot 100.
