Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes, salah satu personelnya, menulis lagu tersebut bersama Marqueze Etheridge dan Organized Noize.

Lagu tersebut dirilis untuk album kedua mereka, CrazySexyCool, yang dirilis pada 1994.

"Waterfalls" berhasil menembus nominasi Grammy Awards 1996 untuk dua kategori, Record of the Year dan Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
