Ruel pertama kali mempersembahkan lagu ini secara live saat tur konser di Asia pada awal 2019.

Lagu "Real Thing" kemudian dimuat dalam album EP keduanya, Free Time.

Ketika diwawancarai oleh Coup de Main, Ruel membocorkan bahwa lagu "Real Thing" ditulisnya setelah ia mendapat inspirasi dari film High Fidelity (2000).
