Lagu ini diluncurkan pada Januari 2018 sebagai penghormatan atas kepergian Lil Peep yang meninggal dunia pada November tahun sebelumnya.

"Spotlight" menjadi lagu anumerta pertama dari Lil Peep.

Melalui Twitter Marshmello menjelaskan bahwa awalnya ia tidak berniat untuk merilis lagu ini hingga akhirnya ibu dari Lil Peep sendiri yang memintanya.
