Lagu ini menjadi trek pembuka dalam album studio kedua mereka yang bertajuk A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002).

Kabarnya, penulisan lagu "Politik" terinspirasi dari kejadian terorisme 11 September 2001 yang sering disebut sebagai peristiwa 9/11.

"Aku menulis lagu ini pada 9/11 dan kami mulai merekamnya pada 9/13," jelas Chris Martin, vokalis Coldplay, dilansir dari buku biografi bertajuk Coldplay Look at the Stars.
