Ditulis oleh sang vokalis, Eddie Vedder, lagu ini menggambarkan kemarahan terhadap perang di Irak dan mengkritik pemerintah AS secara halus.

Eddie mengatakan "World Wide Suicide" sebagian besar ditulis tentang Pat Tillman, mantan pemain sepak bola yang meninggalkan karir olahraganya untuk menjadi Angkatan Darat Amerika.

Ia kemudian terbunuh karena tembakan saat berpatroli di daerah berbatu di Afghanistan timur.
