Lagu ini dipilih menjadi singel kedua untuk album studio ketiga mereka, Politics of Living (2018).

Dalam sebuah wawancara bersama Official Charts Company, Steve Garrigan selaku vokalis Kodaline mengatakan bahwa ia sangat bersemangat menggarap "Follow Your Fire" karena lagu ini terdengar baru baginya.

"Lagu ini lumayan seperti baru bagi kami. Zona nyamanku adalah lagu slow ballad (dan) lagu ini bukanlah lagu slow ballad dalam hal apa pun," tuturnya.
